This weekend took me to a whole different world, my old stomping grounds in Burlington, Vermont. I lived there for 8 years during graduate school and afterwards while I ran Green Candle Theatre Company. I have lots of friends there, and it is always a joyous reunion when I visit. The pace of life is completely different, and I enjoy going back to see everyone.
This one was for a BBQ, campout and show by the talented House of Lemay. I would have included lots of pictures of the event, but my camera is still in the shop. A friend of mine hosts this annual event on his land, a beautiful location outside of Burlington on Lake Champlain.
On Sunday morning, I sat out on his dock, drinking a beer and enjoying conversation with my friends from the Green Mountain State. It was relaxing. It was nice. It was scenic. I got a sunburn. As I sat there, I realized that not much had changed since I left over 5 years ago. There are minor differences. We are all older and wiser (in some cases), but the life essentially remains the same there.
It reminds me why it was time to leave when I did. I needed to move forward. I needed the surge of speed that is New York to carry me forward on its wave and to teach me as much as I could learn. I needed that energy and pace that is so vital here.
Going to Vermont is like stepping from a fast moving lane into a still picture. And nothing is wrong with either, they are just two different paces. Someday, I may return to my friends up north when I have learned and done all that I need to here. You never know. In the meantime, it remains a glorious place to visit, especially in the summer.
