WD 50 sits on Clinton Street on the lower east side. When you arrive it obviously stands out in the neighborhood as one of the newer places. It opened in 2003 and the experience still shines.
I went last night with a friend of mine to try their 9 course tasting menu along with the wine tasting. The foods were inventive and playful, bringing a sense of fun to the meal while tempting the palate with a variety of styles and flavors. For instance, the miso soup course arrives with a small plastic bottle with a tiny red cap. Inside, is a substance that when squirted in circles into the soup cooks in the soup and forms noodles. The deconstructed beef tongue sandwich with fried mayonnaise cubes had my friend turning up his nose, that is until he tasted it and then he wanted more. And the foie gras, with beet juice inside was absolutely delightful. Not to be missed is the wine pairings which were expertly selected to go with each of the dishes from the start to the last dessert, Wild Rice Rice Krispy Treats. But I forgot to mention the Manchego cheesecake, foamed pineapple, and pear. Wow. Such presentation and such fabulous flavors. All to be capped off with the bill presented with a small bowl of chocolate and curry covered almonds that left a number of flavors dancing around your mouth.
I will not soon forget my evening at WD50 and I will return the next time I need to take someone out for a wonderful evening of adventure.
