The New York Burger Company, Better Burger, Pop Burger and McDonalds - The Burger Wars of Chelsea.

posted Thursday, 11 August 2005

Fairly new to the Chelsea area is another slightly upscale hamburger joint to join the growing numbers.  You used to have to go to a diner to get a burger around here.  Now they are everywhere.

First was Better Burger on 7th at 19th.  Nothing could be more of a misnomer.  I have tried it two or three times with various people, all of whom walked away feeling they paid way too much for what was really a lesser burger.  Enough said.

Then, Pop Burger invaded, just south of 15th on 9th Avenue.  Pop Burger makes an upscale and much better tasting version of sliders.  If you don't know what sliders are, get drunk and head to the nearest White Castle.  When you are sober and hungry again, give Pop Burger a try.  The burger are moist and yummy and the fries aren't too bad.  While a little pricey, at least they taste good.

Finally, the New York Burger Company just opened on 7th Avenue around 22nd Street.  Again, they are not cheap compared to the Big Mac you can order a few doors away.  But these taste much, much better.  I ordered a Dallas Burger and heartily enjoyed myself.  It had fried onions and BBQ sauce on top with lettuce and tomato slices.  This was a good fairly basic burger.  Large and plentiful.  The fries, on the other hand, were not perfect.  They had a lot of potential, but were a little soggy.

So head out there and find your favorite.  Let me know when you do!
