Shima, Japanese Restaurant

posted Sunday, 31 July 2005
The other night I was in the east village at Nowhere with friends. Two friends of mine were in the city from Florida and they wanted to go out for Sushi. I was going to walk across town to Taste of Tokyo, one of my prefered sushi places, when my other friends suggested Shima at 188 Second Avenue (at 12th). They said it was cheap and fresh, so we tried it.

Now while I wouldn't say it was cheap, I would say it was fresh. I had Miso soup, a tuna tartar appetizer, and the sushi plate. This was probably some of the freshest sushi I have had in NYC. It even beat Nobu for sushi freshness. (Nobu still has great hot dishes that out do most other restaurants. I was just never overly impressed by their sushi.) The fish was buttery and soft, kind of melt in your mouth fresh. The seaweed was soft and almost unnoticable on the rolls, unlike many places where I have found it to be chewy and in the way. While my friends had raved about the tuna tartar, I was unmoved. It was good, but just not my favorite. As for their rolls, their list is short, but I understand that the specialty rolls are amazing. I will have to try some next time I go there.
