Apparition : An Uneasy Play of the Underknown, by Anne Washburn, opens at the Connelly Theater on the 4 Dec 2005.
Apparition is an uneasy play and not an easy play. Anne Washburn has created a mishmash of words, scenes and characters that come together to explore the underknown. Just what is it that makes us uneasy? Is it the bump in the night? You may learn more about your personal demons by the end of this dive to the depths of mood. Or you may stay too close to the top and not quite get what Anne Washburn sees and hears.
Creating a moody piece on stage is very difficult. I have seen many plays fail at this, and a few have success. The most successful I have seen was The Woman in Black in London, a play that kept the audience on the edge of its seat and jumping off their seats. Apparition does not quite manage that level of success, but it does have a number of darkly creepy moments that made the audience take note. Some can be foreseen, and some creep up on the audience unexpectedly.
The sets, lighting, and sound are all gorgeously designed. All three work together to easily switch locations again and again in a magical way that can only be seen on the theatrical stage. They illuminated one of the true joys of the stage that everyone should experience at some time in their lives.
As the holiday season is upon us, it does seem like a strange time to launch a creepy show at first. However, it reminds me of the unknown of the holidays, angels, miracles, and ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. With this in mind, Apparition fits right into the season.
